The Last few weeks have been crazy busy! Ok... I admit part of the busy has been keeping my 9 acres worth of grass and weeds under control with all of the rain that we have had!

But I have also had the opportunity to photograph a track star from Baker University, an amazingly talented family of Horse professionals, The cutest, most adorable 2 year old, the funniest dog, a horse and a cat, very cool teenagers and several other families that I hope to feature soon. Oh Yes and I can not forget the most amazing 84 year old great grandmother ever !!

My 3 Graduates!

Tomorrow Courtney Graduates from KU, Last December Taylor graduated from JOCO Culinary school and has recently moved to Napa CA to manage a store called Oakville Grocery and Reagan graduates from High School.

So many things are changing.

A few days before Taylor moved we took these images. ( and many more ) I wanted a time capsule to mark this time in my kids life. As I get older I realize more and more how important it is to record these special moments. Time passes so quickly.

I will always treasure these images of my kids!

Grandma

Today I found out that one of my clients “ Grandma “ passed away 8 days before she was to have her 99th birthday. She was a very special lady and she adored her family. It blessed me so much to get to know her and photograph her and her family.

She reminded me a lot in spirit of my Grandmother. I was told that she was not feeling well at all that day and yet she put her all into the photo session.

After the session I caught my self tearing up while working on the images that I had captured of her because I was reminded of the pictures that I had not captured of my Grandmother. We had a time scheduled and were waiting for my brother and his family to come home from Switzerland where they were living. Three days before they arrived my Grandmother fell and broke her hip and died three weeks later. Oh how I wish that I had great portraits of my Grandmom interacting with her beloved grandkids and great grandkids. They would be priceless to me now!

A photographer friend of mine once told me about one of his clients - a man who scheduled three different photography sessions, one with each of his grandchildren. In each session he was photographed doing what he loved doing with each child. With one he was reading a book while she sat in his lap. With another, tying a fishing lure on a pole because they loved to fish together. With the third he smoked his pipe while the little one watched the smoke.

The man chose his images and had each one mounted on gator board. When he came to the studio to pick up his images he asked to use a room where he spent more than an hour writing a letter on the back of each image to the child that was in the print. He told each one how special they were to him and how much he loved them. Then the man had each image framed in a special frame - the image could be turned on a hinge to reveal the letter on the back. What an incredible gift to each of those kids!

The passing of “Grandma” makes me realize again the importance of what I do and the wonderful gift that I can create for people. A portrait of a loved one only becomes more priceless with age!

Tyler is a Kansas City senior that I photographed not long ago. He wants to be a personal trainer and has a passion for fitness.

I LOVE his images - they show how amazingly fit and tough he is but also the fact that that he has a very sweet spirit shows through as well!

Baby's First Year!

It is amazing to me just how fast a year goes by and how fast a baby changes from new born to toddler in that year. Hear are a couple of babies first year.

It was really fun for me to photograph them and watch them grow. Maybe that is because my kids just turned 17, 19, and 21!

Kevin Kubota's Bootcamp / Sister's Oregon/Five Pines Lodge

Wow 10 days hanging out with Kevin Kubota and Company and all the amazing other photographers has flown by. Five Pines Lodge in Sister's Oregon is an incredible place to stay and I have learned so much! I can't wait to start using all of this new knowledge and fun creative tools when I get home!

We have been together learning and working on projects literally from 8:30 in the morning until after 10:00 every night. I am very thankful to Kevin and his team for choosing me for this wonderful Scholarship and for all of the new friends I have made!

Here is a collage of a fun project that Kevin encouraged us to do. The project was to take images of the Alphabet using lenses that we do not use often. I used a wide angle 12-24 and a lens baby lens invented by the amazing Craig Strong for these images.

I just wanted to let you know that the Down Syndrome Guild had a little article in their Nov/Dec newsletter about the books that we both donated to them. They extend their thanks and explain the book as a resource for families preparing for heart surgery. It is a really nice article and they mention you by name as the "very talented photographer" and include your website. I wasn't sure if they would send a copy of the newsletter to you so I wanted to be sure you knew about the good coverage. : )
Thank you again and forever for the pictures, video, books and experience. I am so glad to have met you and to have this beautiful record of our experience and to be able to share it with so many others.
Matt's mom took her book to the NICU she works at in Des Moines and they loved it. She said the neonatologist was absolutely gaga over the book. She wanted everyone in the hospital to see it!
I also had the incredible privilege of meeting Dr. Lofland's scrub nurse at the Step Up for DS Walk. She found our team tent there (I don't know how - a God thing) and introduced herself. She said she had been out to your place the day before to pick up her book and you told her to look for our team. Thank you! What a blessing to meet her and be able to thank her face-to-face for her amazing job. I was thrilled that the Lord worked that out, as I'm sure they rarely get to see their little patients running around after having their hearts fixed. And how wonderful for her (and other nurses) to have such a beautiful book that shows the amazing work she does. I love to see how our God works out so many stories at once and thinks of details that never occur to me. We serve an awesome God!

I received the greatest news today! Kevin Kubota - one of the most amazing photographers and one I have learned so much from - offered a scholarship to his incredible "boot camp" a week long, intensive, inspirational photography business workshop to one photographer who has a passion for photography, a financial need to improve his/her business and a history of personal charitable giving. I WON THE SCHOLARSHIP!!!! I am thrilled beyond words and so excited to have this opportunity to learn for a whole week from Kevin and other amazing photographers! AND the bonus is that it is in Oregon! I am so excited and thankful for this opportunity!!

A Senior Session and a puppy : )

Wow time flies when you are busy! I just realized that it has been a while since I have posted any thing on my blog. I will try harder to keep my blog up to date. So you ask what has kept me so busy?? Besides lots of photography of course... Check out www.simplygoldenpuppies.com. On Aug 12th our Golden Retriever had 11 puppies! Because there were so many my son Reagan and I - with help from many friends- bottle fed the pups for 4 weeks to help our Golden keep up with the milk demand. The pups are adorable!! And we are totally smitten by all of them!

We are planing to photograph all 11 tomorrow so hopefully we will have pictures for the blog soon - in the mean time check out the puppy web site.

Here is another image of the Great Wall of China, It is an absolutely amazing thing to see and climb on. I say climb and not walk on because it is incredibly steep and slick in places. It seems to go on and on forever. There are places where someone can be just 15 feet in front of you and seem to disappear because the wall is so steep.

HOME FROM CHINA!

HOME from CHINA!! Reagan and I had a great time. It was wonderful to experience China and Hong Kong with my daughter who has been living in Beijing for the last 6 months. She can really speak Chinese now!
I will be posting some of my images over the next few weeks.
Our first night in Beijing We went to a little tiny village where you can walk a mountain trail up to the great wall - Not your normal tourist destination. The Great wall is amazing! I was surprised how steep in places it was. At one point we squatted down lifted our hands and " sledded " down the wall on our shoes. It was raining a little so it was pretty slick. Quite a hike caring 3 lenses and my camera. Here is one image that I took - more to come later...

Today I am packing up my camera bag and heading to the Nelson Art Gallery. This is my 4th year to help my good friend Mary Watkins photograph The Jewel Ball. I love photographing this event! It is like photographing 20-30 brides at one time. You will never see so many beautiful dresses in one place. Among other things, I have the wonderful job of capturing candid images in the dressing room as the girls are getting ready... So much fun for me!

It is amazing every year how they decorate for this event... Flowers and bouquets everywhere - it seems like every year they out do the year before.

I count it a blessing every time I am able to capture these milestones in peoples lives. I have known Lauren since she was about 4 years old so it was extra special!!

My Daughter leaves for China

I took my daughter Courtney to the airport this morning! Many of you know her because she has helped me with my photography business in many areas since she was just 14. Now she is 20 and is headed to China for 6 months to study international business and Chinese. It is super cool how all of the details have worked out for her and this trip. She won scholarship money that has paid for her entire trip, met wonderful chinese people who are taking her under their wing and giving her a place to live and places to visit. Today another one of those "God coincidences" I call them happened. She was just about to go through the check in and a guy sitting a little ways away heard us mention that she was traveling to China. He is a 24 yr. old Harvard Grad who will be going to law school to study international law. in the mean time he is traveling to China to stay with his brother who lives in Beijing with his wife and baby. He and Courtney will travel all the way there on the same flights and get this.... they will both return in 6 months on Aug. 2nd at the same time on the same flights! They are both staying in beijin.

They got to sit with each other on the flight to chicago and they have a lot in common. As a mom I am very happy that she now knows someone that can keep her company on the long trip there and back again!

Maril's Senior Session

Maril's mom Malia and I have been friends since our tri - delta college days at K-state. Malia who is also a good photographer helps me out at the studio from time to time and has helped me out at a couple weddings. SO... it was really fun to photograph Maril who as you can see is very beautiful! We went to a small old town and convent that is close to the studio for part of her senior session. It is always fun for me to go to different locations to photograph. Maril was great! Here are a few of her images.

I am very fortunate where I live to have a great view of the sunsets from my back yard.

Lynsey's Senior session was really special. She lives right next to her grandparents out in the country. Her grandparents planted the sunflower patch especially for her senior picture session. The corn field and the pond is on their farm as well. I have fun playing with different effects on some images.... The truck images are examples of how the same image can look so different.

I was sitting on my back deck yesterday. It had been raining.... The clouds were just starting to break up allowing a little bit of sunlight to shine down into my pasture. There was quite a bit of fog still in the air giving these images a kind of dreamy look.

Beauty And The Beast : )

I started photographing the beauty

( aka Brooklyn ) when she was 9 days old. She has always been dainty and beautiful and from the start she loved having her picture taken.

21/2 years later along came the ”Beast“ ( aka Liam). Although adorable in his own right

Liam is pure boy, he is big ( just as big as his sister who is over twice his age ), rough and tough and a dirt magnet. Liam is not so crazy about getting his picture taken but this time around he was just a little put out that his sister was getting so much attention while the focus was on her.

( see the “pouty” picture ) After a little coaxing... liam cheered up and we got some great shots of him too : )

One time when I was on the phone with the kid's grandma Dorothy, Dorothy turned to Brooklyn and said " hey Brooklyn I'm talking to Muffet. Brooklyn's response was " My Muffet? " I love that!

IN RESPONSE TO LILY'S SURGERY IMAGES

One Reason why I love being a photographer is because I LOVE people... and... I love being able to touch peoples lives. Being able to capture big and small moments in a person's life and then being able to feel the emotions and feelings in each of the images that I capture is priceless. After time goes by and memories fade... you have the images to bring back that special moment in time. I believe that God has given me this "gift of photography" and I love sharing it as often as I can.

I want to share with you a couple of e-mails that I received in regards to the surgery images below. One is from Lily's mom and the other is from one of the cardiac nurses. How she cares for the children in the Operating Room is wonderful. I have been totally blessed by these kind words... I hope that you will be as well.

In Response to Lily's Images:

Hi Muffet,

I have been thinking all weekend about the pictures of Lily's surgery. I want to let you know what a beautiful, priceless gift they are to me and Matt. And to Lily, eventually. I can just imagine when she's old enough sharing the book with her and talking her through the whole experience.

I am so amazed how God orchestrated everything to bring our family and you together. What a loving and sovereign God we serve. We feel so blessed to have had you photograph the journey at Children's Mercy. You truly have a gift of capturing beautiful moments and emotions in your shots. The pictures are amazing and really tell the story. As Lily's mom, it means so much for me to see the pictures of the care and compassion Lily received from the nurses and staff when I couldn't be there with her. The pictures of her smiling and looking so relaxed in the OR before they started the procedure speak right to my heart and give me such peace and joy to know she wasn't scared. Thank you for that gift. I also love seeing the pictures of Grace and Sophie looking at Lily after surgery and the concern on their faces. It helps me to remember what a difficult time that was for them and how much they love their little sister. I could comment on each photo and tell you what they each mean to me - especially to see my daughter's heart. It brings tears to my eyes as I right this. How awesome! Thank you from the bottom of our hearts!! God has used you to really touch our lives in a beautiful way. And your pictures have already touched others as you have shared them and we have shared them with extended family. Many of you know that I think the world of Children's Mercy Hospital. My niece has been a patient there many times so when I was asked to help with a fundraising project for their new cardiac unit I could not have been more excited. The images that I took for that project I turned into a book which you can see on my web site www.muffetpetrehn.com. The book called "The Gift Of Life" recently won a Fujifilm Masterpiece award and will also travel word wide with the PPA loan collection. The images that you see here are from a second surgery that I photographed at Children's Mercy Hospital. I will be making another book that will be given to the Down Syndrome Guild to help families understand what their child might go though during open heart surgery. I hope that as you look at these images you will be able to see how incredible the Doctors and Nurses and Staff are. Every time that I am at CMH I am so blessed by their skill and genuine care and concern for every child. A special Thank You to Bonnie! You are Awesome! You made sure that I was in the right place at the right time to capture these special images.
